October 2000
The 2000 Pacific Rim Forum hosted its 500 senior
delegates in Sydney with a conscious alignment to another important
regional occasion - the option of attending the concluding three
days of the cross-millennium Olympic Games. By then identifying
and exploring the key regional issues and trends of significance
at end 2000 which were most likely to impact the future planning
of corporations operating in the Asia/Pacific region, ten unavoidable
issues emerged:
- Managing ongoing financial
volatility
- Recognising the many
still absent reforms
- Understanding South-East
Asia's growing marginalisation
- Watching Japan's continuing
ossification
- Focusing upon Asia's
central triangular relationship
- Driving Asia's shifting
regional architecture (e.g. ASEAN + 3)
- Grasping Asia's capital
market imperatives
- Catching the post-industrial
train: science-based innovation (from digitisation to bionomics
to the fuel cell). The 21st Century's growth industries
- Acknowledging the
importance of China's formal integration into the global
economy
- Anticipating major
generational change

"The Pacific Rim Forum provided
a most valuable insight into the geo-political and economic
issues facing our region and it was enlightening to listen to
a range of views from intelligent and informed commentators.
Without a doubt, the quality of the discussions on a whole range

present."
